How to set up your first hydroponic system in Nigeria

Starting your first hydroponic system can feel intimidating, but the fundamentals are simple: water, nutrients, light, and a plant that doesn't need soil to hold it up. Everything else is optimisation.

Start by picking a system sized for your space. A single Hydroponic Tower Pro fits a 60×60cm footprint and suits a balcony or kitchen corner, no need to convert a whole room. Choose leafy greens or herbs for your first grow; they're forgiving and harvest in 3–6 weeks.

Lagos's humidity works in your favour for germination but makes pH drift faster than in drier climates, so check it every 2–3 days for your first month until you get a feel for your system's rhythm.

Once your seedlings are established, switch to a weekly rhythm: check nutrient levels, top up water, and inspect roots for colour and smell. White, firm roots are healthy; brown or slimy roots signal it's time to flush the reservoir.

Your first harvest will teach you more than any guide. Keep a simple log of what you changed each week, light hours, nutrient strength, pH, so you can repeat what worked.
